Ableton Sequencers v1.2 ALP

Whether you want precise control over complex patterns or ways to generate new ideas, this Pack of Max For Live Sequencers will open up all kinds of possibilities in your music-making.

Sequencers are a fundamental component in electronic music production, responsible for triggering samples and telling synths which notes to play. They can also be used for many other functions relating to making sound move, and they come in many different forms. In this Pack, you can get your hands on three different Sequencers built in Max for Live by Ableton device designers. Each Sequencer has its own quirks and potential uses, but they all promise rewarding and surprising results for anyone who spends time exploring them.

Step Arp

Step Arp deals with one of the most popular uses for a sequencer, to create arpeggios. Compared to Ableton’s native Arpeggiator, StepArp’s sequence can be controlled and altered step-by-step, defining six different values including velocity, note length, chance and transposition. It’s the sequencer to use when writing melodic parts, with more than enough controls to tweak for variations while recording or during a performance.

SQ Sequencer

SQ Sequencer takes its inspiration from classic hardware sequencers, providing up to 16 steps to control a range of parameters. Crucially, each parameter lane can cycle through its own step length and playback direction, which allows for more detailed control over the way your pattern evolves. The Condition feature can determine precise rules for when a step will or won’t trigger a MIDI value. When these various settings get pushed in different directions, you can end up with long and winding patterns that reach well beyond the convention of a repetitive 16-note loop.

Rhythmic Steps

Rhythmic Steps has been particularly aimed towards use with Drum Racks, making it perfect for sequencing polyrhythmic beats. The step sequencer page is especially intuitive for determining note trigger probabilities, while the unique option of an alternate page allows you to cut a different drum sound into a sequencer lane to create distinct variations to your sequence in an instant. There’s also an emphasis on very specific control over swing, plus easily accessible randomization of settings to encourage drum sequencing that feels dynamic and natural.

No Rules

There are no rules as to how these sequencers can be used with Live — their intuitive design sits on top of deep potential when you familiarize yourself with all the possible controls. Coupled with the continually expanding synthesis and sound generation potential in the newly updated Live 12.1, the Sequencers by Ableton Pack is a springboard into new territory for any music maker.
