Groove3 Top 10 Mastering Tips TUTORIAL

Are you somewhat new to mastering and ready to take it to the next level? In this mastering video course, veteran Groove3 instructor Larry Holcombe will show you 10 must-know tips and ideas for transforming your masters quickly. Not only will you learn crucial concepts like creating a solid low end and suppressing resonances, but you’ll also get several workflow tips that will start to save you time and get results right away! By the end of the course, you’ll be able to implement all these concepts in your very next production. These videos are designed for those looking to improve the sound and efficiency of their masters.

To begin the course, Larry shows how you can use Saturn 2 for focused, dynamic saturation in the mastering chain, resulting in more punch and a richer tonality. Then you’ll see how aiming for the same master levels each time can save you time when setting up a new session.

Next, you’ll see how to concentrate on the side frequencies, using both static and dynamic EQs, to help achieve a balanced sound. Then Larry demonstrates how to reduce high-end spikes with Soothe2 for smooth, round top end, followed by a look at keeping your low end sounding solid and in phase by making sure it’s mono. Other topics include suppressing resonances (using Pro-Q4), avoiding over-compressing the sides (using Pro-C2 in mid/side mode), clipping (to prevent overworking the master limiter), low-end groove recovery (rebuilding some interplay between low-end elements with Low End Focus), and enhancing drops (automating the limiter threshold).

Any one of these tips will make a noticeable difference on its own, but when you combine all of them, you won’t believe the difference! Check out the individual Top Ten Mastering Tips video tutorial descriptions for more information on all the information that’s covered along with ideas on how these tips can be used in your own productions.
