UNRAVEL explores the delicate and expressive character of the viola, highlighting its most human and intimate qualities. The sounds are rich with air, bow texture, and rosin detail, allowing each note to carry depth, movement, and improvisational flexibility.
Recorded over two days with violist Hailey Walterman, the sessions focused on capturing close, emotional performances. The result is a collection of sounds that sit between intimacy and vulnerability—able to communicate feeling without needing to be loud.
Expressive & Atmospheric
UNRAVEL is designed for compositions that tell subtle, emotional stories. It introduces breath, motion, and presence into your music, working beautifully on its own or layered with other textures. The natural bow noise, rosin, and performance details add a soft human character that often feels similar to the emotional expression of the human voice.
Recording & Production
The viola performances were recorded during Inlet Studio sessions in Los Angeles, then later shaped and refined in our Berlin studio. These recordings originate from the same sessions used for Viola Drama Textures, but were revisited with a new focus on fragility, closeness, and subtle emotional movement.
The material was carefully edited and transformed into a more intimate and playable instrument, emphasizing expression rather than perfection.
Philosophy
Rather than aiming to perfectly recreate a traditional instrument, the goal behind UNRAVEL was to preserve the elements that make a performance feel alive—breath, friction, and the natural movement of the bow. Developed in close collaboration with a professional violist, this library was crafted into a cinematic instrument that maintains its human core.
