Splice Originals Trippy Chicha WAV

Originating in Lima, Peru in the late 1960s, Chicha music, also known as Peruvian cumbia, fuses the tropical sounds of cumbia with the traditional Andean sounds of huayno (see more in the Story below). Additional influences from international genres such as surf and psychedelic rock, salsa, and even techno give Chicha a distinct sound. Producers and musicians El Dusty and Beto Martinez teamed up in Austin, TX – a hub of Latinx music and culture – to craft this pack.

The first for Martinez (known for his work with Grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma and Money Chicha), this is El Dusty’s third Splice Originals release after bringing us Coastal Vibes Reggaeton and Sounds of Cumbia: EL Dusty. Unlike other styles of cumbia, Chicha’s harmonics are based on the pentatonic scale typical of Andean music. It’s played with keyboards or synthesizers and up to three electric guitars that can play simultaneous melodies, an element derived from the harp and guitar lines of Andean huayno.

The rhythmic electric guitar in chicha is played with upstrokes, following patterns derived from Peruvian coastal creole waltz. Chicha songs contain electric guitar solos, following the rock music tradition. Using old school gear and instruments, Martinez and El Dusty reproduced the sounds of 1960s Peruvian Chicha music with extreme accuracy. If you want to add some serious groovy tropical surf vibes to your productions, this is the pack for you.
