Groove3 Tech House Production Explained [TUTORIAL]

Join electronic production guru Larry Holcombe for a comprehensive video course on creating and producing tech house music! In this series, you’ll learn how to select and create the right instruments, work with samples and loops, add effects to build tension and add excitement, layer sounds for maximum impact, and much more. Larry even shows you how to mix and master the track at the end so that it’s ready to share with the world. If you’re a fan of Tech House, you don’t want to miss this! These videos are designed for fans of tech house and other house music.

To get things started, Larry welcomes you to the course by playing through the track that he’ll be creating throughout it, so you’ll have a clear idea of what you’re working toward. Then it’s down to it, and Larry starts off by focusing on the kick sample, demonstrating a handy oscilloscope technique for analyzing the sample. This is followed by a clap to help thicken the backbeat and hats (open and closed) and a ride to throttle the beat’s top end.

Next, Larry begins incorporating loops he has chopped up using the Cableguys ShaperBox 3 plugin, along with additional percussion loops to enhance the groove. Then it’s time for the bass, which he designs from scratch with Xfer Records’ Serum synth and then doubles with a flanged percussive element for some additional interest. Vocals come next, and Larry shows you how to use the Bridge plugin from Splice to bring in a vocal sample and match the tempo and key to the track. There’s more to come as well, including arrangement tips for the track, adding leads and effects (accenting sections, building energy for the drops, etc.), extra effects for building tension (snare rolls, risers, etc.), mixing and mastering, and more!

By the end of this course, you’ll be well-versed in all things tech house and ready to start on your own production right away. (Not to mention, you’ll learn plenty of techniques that can also be applied to many other genres!) Check out the individual tech house production video tutorial descriptions for more information on everything that’s covered and how you can implement these ideas on your own.
